To the Editor:
For the past three decades, Illinois legislators have created districts that ensure their re-election by drawing their own maps behind closed doors. These districts are drawn to protect incumbents.
The political party drawing the map, Republican or Democrat, has been decided by drawing a name out of a hat. The Fair Map Amendment will bring an end to these practices. What the Fair Map Amendment proposes:
1. Legislators will not draw maps. An independent commission will.
2. Maps will be drawn in an open and transparent process, with public input.
3. Specific criteria will be used to draw maps to protect minority voting rights and to draw districts that are more open to challengers.
4. Maps will be drawn for the people, not politicians.
By signing the petition, Illinois voters will put the Fair Map Amendment on the November 2010 ballot
The League supports this important redistricting reform effort to ensure that voters will get to choose their legislators, rather than legislators choosing their constituents.
