Jury considering underaged sex case

WOODSTOCK – A jury has begun deliberating in the case of a man who admitted on the stand that he had sex with an underaged relative and videotaped it – but said it was because there was a gun to his head.

John "Jack" Reed, 35, of McHenry, is charged with 16 counts of aggravated sexual assault and child pornography. Prosecutors Wednesday showed jurors four videos of Reed having sex with the girl.

During closing arguments, Assistant State's Attorney Michael Combs called Reed's actions vile and despicable.

"This whole trial was disgusting," he said. "I wanted to take a shower after that video was played."

But defense attorney Bill Bligh, who was appointed as special public defender, said that prosecutors were not looking at the whole picture.

The whole picture, Bligh said, involves a man named Timothy Abed.

"Abed is outside the view of the state's small picture view," he said. "This is the rest of the story the state doesn't want you to know about."

During his testimony, Reed said that he walked in on Abed receiving oral sex from a minor, although the jury did not hear that the minor was the same alleged victim in Reed's case.

Abed, who had been dating the girl's mother, was convicted in May of sexually abusing the girl and is awaiting sentencing.

Reed said that a few days after walking in on Abed and the girl, Abed showed up at Reed's house with three other men, one of whom pointed a gun at the back of Reed's head. Reed said he had been watching his son at the time, who was ripped from his arms.

Abed told him to go get nude pictures of the girl, Reed said, which he did by taking her to a parking lot and having her take the photos in a car with his cell phone.

A few days later, Reed said, Abed again came to his house with one of the men from the previous incident and told Reed to have sex with the girl.

Out of fear for his life, his son's life, and the lives of his family members, Reed said he did so – and videotaped it – before giving the tape to Abed.

"They were satisfied with what they got so they left," Reed said.

But there was more than one video, and Reed said it was because Abed wanted him to keep bringing the videos.

"I knew exactly what I did was wrong," he said on cross examination.

He also admitted telling a woman, who also participated in sexual acts with the girl and Reed, that he "was a human being" and "enjoyed the physical part of it, but hated the mental part."
