CRYSTAL LAKE – Geri Renner took home a new member of the family Saturday after meeting 3-year-old Maxine at On Angels' Wings Thrift Store.

"It was love at first sight," said Renner, who's visiting her son and daughter-in-law in Cary for Father's Day weekend.

On Angels' Wings, an animal rescue organization, held its second annual event, "All About Dogs Luau and Pet Adoption," Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its Crystal Lake thrift store located at 5186 Route 14.

As a self-sustaining nonprofit, On Angels' Wings runs two thrift stores – one in Crystal Lake and one in Lake Zurich – to support animal rescue efforts. The group partners with other animal rescue and shelter organizations throughout the area to reduce the number of pet euthanizations because of homelessness.

Renner, of Mahomet, and her daughter-in-law, Donna, spotted a flier for the dog adoption event and decided to check out the dogs that were up for adoption. Maxine, a black-and-white terrier, had been in need of a home for more than a month while undergoing medical procedures to remove two mammary tumors that were diagnosed as breast cancer.

Jeanette Schultz, founder and executive director of On Angels' Wings, said Maxine may have been abandoned by a breeder when the tumors were discovered. One out of four female dogs not spayed develop mammary tumors, Schultz said.

Maxine now has an "excellent prognosis," said her foster parent, Maury Hill, a volunteer with On Angels' Wings who took her to all the vet appointments.

Saturday's event also featured various products and services for dogs such as pedicures, baths, DNA kits, microchipping and homemade treats.

Host vendors also provided educational materials on pet safety and pet care, including the importance of spaying and neutering and never leaving a pet inside a car, especially with summer weather in full swing.

On Angels' Wings is also planning several "All About Cats" events for July.

Renner was impressed with the diminutive pooch's composure considering its ordeal.

"She's very likeable," Renner said. "She hasn't barked once.

"Everybody deserves a second chance."
