RICHMOND – Harvard defeated Richmond-Burton, 69-10, and Genoa-Kingston, 65-13, on Thursday to remain undefeated in the Big Northern Conference East Division.

The Hornets (21-8 overall, 4-0 BNC East) wrestle Marengo on Saturday for a chance to clinch the division title outright.

Harvard coach Mark Payne said winning the conference is a big deal to the team.

“It was one of my goals for the season,” Payne said. “(But) we definitely don’t want to overlook [Marengo]”

G-K defeated the Rockets, 42-34.

Payne said his team is peaking at the right time of the season.

“We finally got everybody healthy,” Payne said. “Our kids are really wrestling well. It’s time.”

The BNC does not hold a conference tournament, which gives the Hornets a little break before heading to the Class 1A Rockford Lutheran Regional on Feb. 7.

“I like having it this way,” Payne said of not having a tournament. “We’ve had a tough schedule. It’s nice having fewer matches at this point in the season.”

Zach Martin had a first period pin against G-K for one of Harvard’s six pins on the night. Martin was one match away from placing at state last season in Class 2A. Now in 1A, Martin is not letting that success make him overconfident.

“It’s a new year,” Martin said. “You’ve got to take one match at a time.”

He is hoping that experience will be beneficial this season.

“I have a little more confidence,” Martin said. “It will be nice going there now that I have a mindset of it already.”

Also winning by pin for the Hornets against G-K were Josh Fiegel at 106, Christian Kramer (145), Marty Krasinski (160) and Bryton Crosby (182). Sergio Jimenez (138) won by pin against R-B.

Against G-K, Richmond-Burton won four of the six matches it wrestled. There were eight forfeited matches.

Grant Sutton at 132 and Matt Ferrero (182) both had two wins on the night.

“It’s nice to see some of the guys are improving,” R-B coach Bret Wojcik said. “It’s the time of year you should be improving. Hopefully we’re ready to go.”

Sutton is looking to win his first state title after placing second last season, fifth in 2013 and sixth as a freshman.

“I think Grant’s had a great season,” Wojcik said. “He’s had some tough competition. I’m excited to see him wrestle and where he’ll end up.”

Gavin Sutton did not wrestle on Thursday but is set to go for regionals after having two surgeries this season. The most recent was to repair his meniscus and had screws removed from his elbow earlier.
