HAMPSHIRE – Money is being raised to help cover funeral and legal expenses for the family of Brianna Soto, a 17-year-old Pingree Grove girl who was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday night near Hampshire.

Soto was a junior at Hampshire High School, according to a GoFundMe page created by Veronica Peralez Puente on behalf of Soto’s family. As of Monday night, about $1,420 had been raised.

“She had her own style, she loved makeup, clothes and was very trendy,” the GoFundMe page read. “But most importantly, [she] loved her mom, dad, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends as she was greatly loved and will be missed by many.”

Soto was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla at about 8:20 p.m. on Dietrich Road between Route 20 and Brier Hill Road when it crossed the center line and struck a 2005 Ford SUV, according to a preliminary investigation from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office

Soto was pronounced dead at Centegra Hospital – Huntley, and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office revealed the cause of death to be blunt trauma to the head and abdomen. The passenger of Soto’s car and four teenagers in the Ford – from Lake in the Hills, Algonquin, Hampshire and Huntley – were sent to the hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

Although the crash still is under investigation by Kane County Sheriff’s detective and members of the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, deputies believe that distracted driving might have played a role in the crash, police said.

In a video posted on the What’s Happening in Elgin IL? Facebook page, Soto’s parents ask for anyone with information on the crash to come forward. They also expressed frustration with police on obtaining information on the crash.

“There are so many unanswered questions as to what happened and how,” the GoFundMe page reads. “The family is looking for those answers and also asking if anyone has any info to please come out and speak.”

Visitation for Soto has been set for 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at DeFiore-Jorgensen funeral home, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley.
