Barrington resident to build 2nd home in Johnsburg to benefit military families

JOHNSBURG – After raising more than a half-million dollars for a nonprofit that benefits military families, Bill Schey is ready to do it again.

Schey, of Barrington, is building another home in Johnsburg this year. Proceeds from the home sale will go to Folds of Honor, a nonprofit that provides scholarships to military families whose parent or spouse was killed or injured in the line of duty.

“I like what they do, and I don’t know of any other organization doing it,” said Schey, who is a Marine veteran.

Schey and his wife, Connie Schey, have been donating to the organization for a number of years in different ways.

In 2014, Connie Schey ran a 10-mile Memorial Day race at Soldier Field and donated the proceeds to the nonprofit.

In 2015, Bill Schey began building a home to donate to the cause. The home sold for about $300,000, and the project also brought in an additional $200,000 in donations, Schey said.

The 2,760-square-foot ranch house Bill Schey is in the process of building now will have three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a three-car garage with a wooden deck and sun room, he said. It’s in the Remington Grove neighborhood of Johnsburg, according to building plans.

“The foundation is in now, but everything froze up a bit,” Bill Schey said. “We’ll start up again when the weather breaks.”

He said about two-thirds of the materials and things he will need to finish the job have been promised.

The cause is close to Bill Schey’s heart not only because he is a veteran, he said.

“I lost a lot of friends in the Vietnam War,” he said. “As you get older, you think back and realize how much they have given, and with today’s service people, it’s the same.”
