Letter: Consolidate the township

To the Editor:

As taxpayers of McHenry Township, we need to thank our Board of Trustees for the good work they are doing to take the necessary steps to reduce our property taxes and reduce the size and cost of government.

In May, the trustees voted to reduce the salaries for the positions of elected officials to those more currently in line with the published figures by Township Officials of Illinois in its published salary survey dated June 1, 2016.

The highest category of earnings reported in the survey is $30,000 and more.

The McHenry Township trustees reduced the supervisor position from $97,000 (plus $1,000 serving as the road district treasurer) to $45,000, the highway commissioner position from $106,000 to $45,000, the assessor position from $87,000 to $45,000, and the clerk position from $14,000 to $10,000. Health and retirement benefits remained the same.

Salaries of $45,000 plus benefits for part-time positions clearly is more in line with published guidance from TOI.  For example, 735 highway commissioners throughout the state of Illinois responded to the survey, 447 of them perform the duties of the position for salaries less than $30,000, and the majority of them receive no health or retirement benefits. Clearly, the duties can be performed for far less than we are paying in McHenry Township, and guidance among highway commissioners on how to get the job done efficiently for less should be readily available, with hundreds of fellow commissioners doing it for less than $30,000.

Consolidation of the township road district into McHenry Township would allow for greater oversight and transparency, ensuring that the duties of the position were executed in the most cost-effective manner.

Vote yes in November to consolidate the township road district into the McHenry Township, which eliminates a unit of government and continues to whittle down the tax burden of McHenry Township.

The assets, equipment and employees will be transferred to the township streamlining administrative responsibilities.

Roads will continue to be maintained as they currently are under the direction of township supervision. Ask your family and friends to vote yes with you.
