The McHenry Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 provided two local education foundations with grants.
VFW Cmdr. Dwane Lungren presented the McHenry Elementary Education Foundation and McHenry District 156 Education Foundation with $2,500 checks Tuesday at the VFW,
3002 Route 120.
“We felt like giving back to the community,” Lungren said, adding that he’s grateful the popular Queen of Hearts raffle drawing generated enough revenue to allow them to donate locally. “This was a good way to spread it out to the school system. ... We wanted to thank the kids and the teachers for putting up with a lot of our stuff.”
Lungren said the local school system has “up-and-coming leaders.”
The McHenry Elementary Education Foundation, established in 1992, distributes resources and mini-grants that enhance elementary education programs and projects, according to McHenry School District 15’s website.
“We do the things that the school district can’t do – the little extras,” said Betty Thompson, a member of District 15’s foundation and the VFW auxiliary.
McHenry High School District 156’s foundation was created in 1993 to enrich learning experiences in the district.
“This came out of the blue. It’s wonderful,” said Mike Roberts, president of District 156’s foundation. “It’s greatly appreciated.”
