Cary-Grove's Bethany Marshall was one of seven local players at the Class 2A Jacobs Girls Tennis Sectional on Saturday in Algonquin to qualify for this week's state tournament hosted by Buffalo Grove, which begins Thursday.
Marshall, a senior and No. 2 seed, was second in the singles bracket, falling to the top seed, Barrington's Niyanthi Puliyala, 7-6 (7-0), 6-4, in the championship match. Marshall is going to state for the second consecutive year.
The Trojans also will send juniors Alina Krembuszewski and Karina Los, who finished fourth in the doubles bracket.
Crystal Lake South senior Skylar Olsen placed third in singles, and Prairie Ridge seniors Maddy Ljunggren and Kaitlyn Theil placed third in doubles. Huntley's Ruhi Gulati took fourth in singles and will make her state debut as a freshman.
Barrington claimed the sectional team title with 32 points, C-G (18) was second, and Crystal Lake Central (12) was third.
Class 2A Harlem Sectional: At Machesney Park, McHenry tied for sixth as a team but did not advance any individuals. Rockford Auburn won the title with 28 points, beating Belvidere North by four points.
Class 1A Antioch Sectional: At Antioch, Johnsburg junior Kamile Aleksaite and senior Abbie Cittadino won the doubles bracket to move on to the state tournament for the second straight year. The duo beat Lakes' Kylie Jozwik and Melissa Variny, 6-2, 6-4, in the final.
Woodstock North junior Aly Cullotta also advanced, taking third in singles. She advanced to state last year and went 3-2, almost making it to Day 3.
Cary-Grove 3, Rockford Auburn 0: At the Class 3A Auburn Regional in Cary, the No. 14-seeded Trojans shut out the Knights in a first-round game. With the win, C-G moves on to face No. 3 seed Dundee-Crown in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Marengo 1, Richmond-Burton 0: At the Class 2A Woodstock North Regional at Marengo, the No. 8-seeded Indians advanced to the semifinals with a shutout over the No. 9 Rockets.
Marengo plays second-seeded Woodstock at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Glenbard East Autumnfest Tournament: At Lombard, Huntley won the 24-team tournament, going 5-0 and sweeping three-time Class 4A state champion Benet, 27-25, 25-23, in the championship match.
Huntley's Taylor Jakubowski was named tournament MVP, and Julia Johnson also was named to the all-tournament team.
The Red Raiders have won 17 matches in a row – including their past 34 sets – and 24 of 25 matches overall. Huntley (30-3) also earned straight-set victories over Providence, Geneva, Naperville Central and Mother McAuley.
Crystal Lake South (11-18) had wins over Providence and Schaumburg, and losses to Naperville Central, Joliet Catholic and Barrington, going 2-3. Jessie Proszenyak had 34 kills and was named to the all-tournament team, Kelly Carlson added 28 digs and seven aces, and McKenzie Wilson had 76 assists.
Plainfield Central Harvest Festival Tournament: At Plainfield, Crystal Lake Central came back and defeated Plainfield Central, 15-25, 25-15, 25-22, in the third-place match, as the Tigers went 4-1 in the two-day tournament.
Camryn Hausler (32 kills, 28 assists, 30 digs, nine blocks) and Madeline Timmerman (25 kills, 10 aces, 16 blocks) were named to the all-tournament team for Central (26-5). Karina Simatos recorded 50 digs and had a 100 percent service accuracy in five matches, Grace Levin had 63 assists, and Maddy McCormick had 19 kills, eight aces and 39 digs.
Paige Hulata had 12 blocks, including nine against Plainfield Central; McKenna Timmerman had 15 kills, seven aces and 26 digs; and Lauren Klutke had 13 blocks.
Central beat Chicago Jones College Prep, Naperville North and St. Francis and lost to St. Charles North.
Maine West Pumpkin Invitational: At Des Plaines, Jacobs finished 3-2 and placed 10th in the two-day tournament with wins against Riverside-Brookfield, 25-22, 25-18, Jacksonville, 26-24, 25-22, and Libertyville, 21-25, 25-23, 28-26. The Golden Eagles lost to Homewood-Flossmoor and Carmel.
Tai Ramirez collected 35 kills, 11 aces and 33 digs in five matches for Jacobs (14-15), Maggie Wallenberger had 43 kills, and Rachel Kaczorowski tallied 99 assists, 31 digs and 13 aces. Jordyn Kelly led Jacobs' defense with 55 digs, and Maddie Breeze added 32.
Richmond-Burton Invitational: At Richmond, the host Rockets won all five matches en route to the tournament championship. Abby Svenson had 43 kills and 52 digs for R-B (17-12), Kaitlyn Suhr tallied 28 kills and 40 assists, and Jordyn Duncan added 39 kills. Sammy Duncan had 19 kills, 10 aces and three blocks, Jesse Klicker had 67 assists and eight aces, and Bella Cecchi had 51 digs.
The Rockets earned wins over Antioch, Boylan, Round Lake, Woodstock North and Zion-Benton.
Elgin Invitational: At Elgin, Dundee-Crown went 3-2 with wins over Elgin, Elgin Academy and St. Edward. The Chargers (5-21) lost to South Elgin and Leyden.
Claire Muhvic recorded 32 kills to lead D-C's attack, Alyssa Crenshaw tallied 30 kills, and Jenna Brown had 102 assists and 13 aces. Mackenzie Field added 21 kills, Natalia Smiech had seven aces, and Hannah Krispin had nine blocks.
