Woodstock North’s Aly Cullotta won two matches in the consolation bracket of the IHSA Class 1A state tennis tournament on Thursday. Cullotta is the only McHenry County athlete to advance past the first day of the tennis state finals.
She lost her first match to Lake View’s Maria Rivas, 6-3, 6-0, then won her next two matches against Ottawa’s Ella Marvel and Triad’s Evelyn Wells. Cullotta will face St. Francis’ Gina Vale at 8 a.m. at Hoffman Estates in the consolation third round Friday.
Also in Class 1A, Johnsburg’s Kamile Aleksaite and Abbie Cittadino lost both their matches and were eliminated.
Class 2A: Cary-Grove’s Bethany Marshall finished her state tournament at 1-2, with a victory in the consolation bracket. Trojans doubles pair Alina Krembuszewski and Karina Los also went 1-2 with a win in the consolation bracket.
Prairie Ridge’s Maddy Ljunggren and Kaitlyn Theil finished 1-2 with a victory in the first round of doubles consolation play. Crystal Lake South’s Skylar Olsen and Huntley’s Ruhi Gulati each lost their first two matches and were eliminated.
McHenry 96.5, Cary-Grove 73.5: At McHenry, the Warriors’ Payton Lange set another McHenry pool record, her third in the past three weeks. Lange swam the 100-yard freestyle in 53.21, besting Brianna Fowles' record of 53.87 set in 1992.
Lange also won the 100 backstroke (59.63). McHenry's Caileigh McCafferty also won two events, the 100 butterfly (1:03.49) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.44).
Morgan Donovan won the 200 freestyle (2:16.41). Melisa Nava finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:20.69). Megan Frost won the 50 free (26.52). Riley Tobin earned a victory in the 500 freestyle (5:57.06).
Lange, McCafferty and Frost teamed up with Paige Bantner to win the 200 medley relay (1:58.32). Nava, Bantner, Tobin and Julia Finch won the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.31). McCafferty, Frost, Nava and Lange finished first in the 400 freestyle relay (3:48.28).
Woodstock 2, Richmond-Burton 0: At Richmond, Hanna Berry led the Blue Streaks with 14 kills and 17 digs in a win against the Rockets, 25-17, 25-22. Sophie Wicker contributed 22 assists and eight digs for Woodstock (22-12-1, 8-4 Kishwaukee River Conference).
For R-B (17-14, 6-6), Kaitlyn Suhr had eight kills, eight assists and seven digs. Katie Regnier added nine digs.
Johnsburg 2, Burlington Central 0: At Burlington, Leah Kottke led the way with 17 digs in a Skyhawks victory, 25-23, 25-22. Sheridan Milewski had six kills, while Hayley Schmidt added five. Adisyn Illg led Johnsburg (17-13, 10-2 KRC) with 16 assists.
Woodstock North 2, Harvard 0: At Woodstock, Brooke Amann led the Thunder (19-16, 8-4 KRC) with 16 kills in a victory, 25-15, 25-17, over Harvard (3-30, 0-12 KRC). Lauren Kunke added 13 digs. Emily Eder had 18 assists and seven digs.
Crystal Lake Central 2, McHenry 0: At McHenry, Madde Blake had eight kills and Madeline Timmerman had seven kills and five blocks as the Tigers (28-5, 13-3) defeated the Warriors in their FVC match.
Blake had five digs and two aces, Karina Simatos had five digs and two aces and Grace Levin had 11 assists. Camryn Hausler had seven assists, three blocks and two kills.
Hampshire 2, Dundee-Crown 0: At Carpentersville, the Whip-Purs (19-16-1, 6-10) defeated the Chargers (5-23, 0-16) in their FVC match, 25-15, 25-16.
Madisyn Reinke had six kill and an ace for the Whips. Riley Seagren had four kills, two aces and one block, and Kielee Tondryk had five kills and one block.
Crystal Lake South 2, Jacobs 0: At Crystal Lake, the Gators defeated the Golden Eagles, 25-21, 25-14, on senior night. McKenzie Wilson led South (14-18, 6-10 FVC) with 19 assists. Megan Ceralde had eight digs. Amelia Reiter had seven kills and three aces. Megan House added six kills.
Jacobs dropped to 14-17 and 7-9 in the FVC.
Huntley 2, Harvest Christian 0: At Huntley, Julia Johnson had nine kills and Sarah Zayas had 19 assists as the Red Raiders (32-2) defeated the Lions, 25-9, 25-16, in a nonconference match.
Natalie Gaszynski had 14 service points, and Loren Alberts had seven points and five kills.
Alden-Hebron 2, Hiawatha 0: At Hebron, Melanie Neilsen has 15 kills and two blocks to lead the Giants (14-13-1) past the Hawks in their nonconference match, 25-19, 25-13.
Nielsen had nine digs and an ace. Taylor Horton had 18 assists, 10 digs and one ace, and Zoe Deeringer had nine digs, three assists and two aces.
