Five people, in conditions ranging from minor to “very critical,” were injured Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision in rural Alden Township, Hebron Fire Chief Tom Linneman said.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Alden and O’Brien roads, Linneman said.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office advised motorists to avoid the intersection for two hours, and the sheriff’s office said it was reopened about 5 p.m.
Linneman said all five people had to be freed from the vehicles, and the process took about 25 minutes for one of them.
Two people were taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, one was taken to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital, one went to Mercyhealth Hospital and Medical Center in Harvard, and the one who Linneman said was in critical condition was flown by a Mercyhealth REACT helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Rockford.
Crews from Harvard, Woodstock, Wonder Lake, Richmond and two towns in Wisconsin assisted at the scene.
Responders from Spring Grove filled in at the Hebron-Alden-Greenwood station.
