To the Editor:
On Nov. 12, eighth-grade students at St. Margaret Mary Catholic School in Algonquin greeted veterans and escorted them into an assembly. After the presentation of the flag, the eighth-grade students read the biographies of the veterans and an original poem. There was a white table service representing the military services. The eighth-graders are under the leadership of Mrs. Jante Peterson and Mrs. Karen Ferguson.
The kindergartners presented each veteran with a large “Thank you for your service” poster, under the leadership of Mrs. Denise Benner and Mrs. Sara Rivers.
The St. Margaret Mary band under Mrs. Madonna Swenson, which is composed of sixth- through eighth-graders, played patriotic songs. The program closed with the retirement of the flag.
The students at St. Margaret Mary really took the assembly seriously and understood how important it is to recognize those who have sacrificed for our country. It is nice to know that the principal, Mrs. O’Hearn, recognizes the importance of our veterans. We are very proud of our granddaughters attending a school that cares.
