McHenry County school spending per student differs by thousands

McHenry County sees variety in instructional, operational funding

McHenry County’s 18 school districts allocate between $5,035 and $10,267 a student in instructional spending annually, according to the latest report from the Illinois State Board of Education.

Operating expenditures range from $9,603 to $18,963 a pupil, according to state records.

Instructional spending – or the activities directly dealing with the teaching of students and the interaction between teachers and students – includes teachers’ and their aides’ salaries and benefits, textbooks, supplies and services. These expenditures also include funding for extracurricular and co-curricular activities, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

Instructional spending is included in operating expenditures, which are the gross operating cost of a school district but exclude things such as summer school, adult education, bond principal retired and capital expenditures, according to ISBE.

Marengo

Marengo High School District 154 spent the most per student in instructional dollars at $10,267. The district operates Marengo High School and had a total enrollment of 701 students, according to ISBE.

The district spent $18,963 in operational costs per student, according to most recent reports from ISBE.

Marengo-Union Elementary School District 165 spent the least amount in instructional dollars per student, with expenditures listed at $5,035 a student, according to ISBE.

The district operates three schools in the Marengo area that serve 1,016 students between preschool and eighth grade.

District 165 spent $9,603 in operating expenditures per student, according to ISBE.

Riley School District 18 spent $7,670 in instructional dollars per student and $10,961 in operational dollars per student. The district operates a school with 291 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, according to ISBE.

Crystal Lake area

Community High School District 155 spent $9,629 a student in instructional funds and $15,922 in operational funds, according to ISBE. The district operates four high schools with a total enrollment of 6,113, according to the most recent ISBE Report Card records.

Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47 spent $6,767 a student in instructional dollars and $12,180 in operational dollars, according to ISBE. The district operates 12 schools, including three middle schools.

Prairie Grove School District 46 spent $9,521 a student in instructional dollars and $15,596 in operational dollars. The district operates Prairie Grove Elementary School and Prairie Grove Junior High School with total enrollment of 683, according to ISBE.

Cary

Cary School District 26 spent $5,522 a student in instructional dollars and $10,382 in operational dollars. The district runs four schools with a total enrollment of 2,478, according to ISBE.

McHenry

McHenry School District 15 spent $8,486 a student in instructional dollars and $14,230 in operational dollars. The district operates eight elementary and middle schools, and has a total enrollment of 4,464, according to ISBE.

McHenry High School District 156 spent $8,374 a student in instructional dollars and $13,794 in operational dollars, according to ISBE. The district operates two high schools with enrollment totaling 2,221 students.

Richmond

Richmond-Burton High School District 157 spent $8,403 a student in instructional dollars and $16,307 in operational dollars. The district operates Richmond-Burton Community High School, which has 666 students, according to ISBE.

Nippersink School District 2 spent $7,901 in instructional dollars and $13,716 in operational dollars a student. The district has two elementary schools and a middle school with a total enrollment of 1,160, according to ISBE.

Johnsburg

Johnsburg School District 12 spent $7,946 a student in instructional funds and $14,014 in operational funds. The district operates Ringwood School Primary Center, Johnsburg Elementary School, Johnsburg Junior High School and Johnsburg High School, with an enrollment totaling 1,861 students, according to ISBE.

Wonder Lake

Harrison School District 36 spent $6,849 a student in instructional dollars and $12,657 in operational dollars. The district is composed of the 395-student Harrison Elementary School, according to ISBE.

Woodstock

Woodstock School District 200 spent $7,399 in instructional dollars and $13,221 in operational dollars per student. The district operates 11 schools with a total enrollment of 6,419, according to ISBE.

Huntley

Huntley School District 158 spent $5,548 in instructional dollars and $9,832 in operational dollars per student. The district operates eight schools with enrollment totaling 9,601, according to ISBE.

Harvard

Harvard School District 50 spent $6,836 in instructional dollars and $11,984 in operational dollars per student. The district is composed of five schools with a total enrollment of 2,732, according to ISBE.

Fox River Grove

Fox River Grove School District 3 spent $7,284 in instructional dollars and $12,934 in operational dollars per student. The district operates two schools with a total enrollment of 416, according to ISBE.

Hebron

Alden-Hebron School District 19 spent $7,482 in instructional dollars and $13,006 in operational dollars per student.

The district operates three schools with a enrollment of 415, according to ISBE.
