High school boys swimming: Cary-Grove co-op retakes Fox Valley Conference crown

WOODSTOCK – The Cary-Grove co-op boys swimming team missed out on the post-Fox Valley Conference championship celebration last year when Jacobs co-op ended the Trojans' decade-long streak of 10 straight titles.

On Saturday, the Trojans, who draw swimmers from all four District 155 schools – Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South, Prairie Ridge and Cary-Grove – brought the conference title back in a dominant way. C-G co-op swept all three relays and won the FVC Invitational by 104 points.

Cary-Grove co-op placed first with 357 points, followed by Jacobs co-op (253) and Huntley (191). Woodstock North co-op (186) was fourth, and McHenry (87) was fifth.

The Trojans celebrated by jumping into the Woodstock North pool – coaches and FVC trophy included.

"We missed out last year, which was a bummer," said Kolin Fadden, a senior at C-G. "We came into this meet knowing that we were going to win. It was awesome jumping in that pool."

The Trojans were first or second in eight of 11 events and won the last four events.

"After losing it last season, it does feel great to have the trophy back in our hands," said Cameron Castro, a senior at South.

Ben Castro, a freshman at Central, won FVC Newcomer of the Year with Huntley senior Dillon Cherwin. Castro was first in the 100-yard backstroke (54.89), second in the 100 butterfly (53.33), and was on two of the Trojans' winning relays.

"He's definitely a game-changer for the team," Trojans coach Scott Lattyak said. "He brings a lot of talent, and team camaraderie as well. The boys love him, and he's meshed right in with the group."

Ben Castro, Hunter Jackson, Peyton Richardson and Cameron Castro placed first in the 200 medley relay (1:38.50), Jackson, Michael Bartczyszyn, Cameron Castro and Fadden claimed the 200 free relay (1:30.36), and Ben Castro, Richardson, Bartczyszyn and Fadden won the 400 free (3:19.46).

Jackson, a sophomore at Prairie Ridge, placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.33) to finish with three first-place finishes.

For the second straight year, Woodstock North co-op's Quinn Cynor was named Most Valuable Swimmer. The Woodstock sophomore set meet records in the 200 individual medley (1:52.96) and 100 freestyle (46.45). Both were under state-qualifying times.

"As of right now, I'm still learning what I'm doing at sectionals," said Cynor, last year's Northwest Herald Boys Swimmer of the Year. "Getting those times feels great, especially since I'm not tapered. The 200 IM, that one was pretty surprising."

Cherwin, swimming in high school for the first time, won the 200 free (1:44.02) and took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.63).

"I felt a little slower in the water, but when I looked at the time, I was surprised," Cherwin said. "Our conference has really great competition. It makes you nervous when you get on the blocks."

STAR OF THE MEET

Quinn Cynor, Woodstock North co-op, so.

The Woodstock sophomore set two meets records in the 200 IM (1:52.96) and 100 freestyle (46.45) and was named FVC Most Valuable Swimmer for the second straight season.
