McHenry School District 15’s assistant superintendent will take over when Superintendent Alan Hoffman retires, the district announced this week.

Hoffman plans to retire at the end of the 2020-2021 school year, and the District 15 board has named Assistant Superintendent Josh Reitz as his replacement. Reitz will begin his new role July 1, 2021.

Reitz began his career as a high school teacher in Johnsburg School District 12. He also was assistant principal in Geneva School District 304 before coming to District 15 in 2008, according to the district.

Reitz’s first role with District 15 was as principal of McHenry Middle School. He was promoted to assistant superintendent in 2012, according to the district.

He lives in Crystal Lake with his wife, Kelly, and his two children.

“It is an honor to serve District 15 and the community of McHenry,” Reitz said in a statement. “For over 10 years I’ve seen firsthand the amazing accomplishments of our staff and students. I’m humbled to have the opportunity to begin this next chapter of our learning community and look forward to seeing the many successes that are still out there for us.”

The board authorized a new five-year contract for Reitz on Tuesday. The contract says Reitz will be assistant superintendent for the 2019-2020 school year, deputy superintendent in the 2020-2021 school year and will be superintendent in the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years, according to the contract.

The agreement begins July 1 and will end June 30, 2023.

Reitz will make $129,975 as assistant superintendent. His salary will increase to $164,000 when he begins deputy superintendent duties, and as superintendent, he will make $198,000, according to the contract.

The district also will reimburse “reasonable” monthly expenses such as cellphone and travel costs. He will get 20 vacation days, 25 paid sick days and five personal days, according to the contract.

“Dr. Reitz has been at the forefront of District 15’s success for years,” board President Kim Qualls said. “We are excited to continue our tradition of excellence that was established under Dr. Hoffman’s tenure into the future.”
