To the Editor:
Like so many of you, my family has benefited from the amazing park district programs, parks and beaches. As a resident of Crystal Lake my entire life, I know how fortunate we are to have all of these entities right in our own backyards.
Soon, there is a very important vote concerning our Crystal Lake Park District Board. The board manages our park district, which services about 55,000 people. My vote is for Debbie Gallagher, who has lived in Crystal Lake for many years, raising her own children in this beautiful city.
Gallagher’s history in Crystal Lake is vital to the park board. She has seen the wonderful changes over the years that have taken place in order to maintain and make better all the areas that the park board governs. She is not a single-issue candidate. While the lake is a huge part of our park district, it is not the only thing that I want a park board member to be concerned about.
I grew up boating, skiing and swimming at the beaches on Crystal Lake. My family continues to use the lake and beaches on a regular basis. However, as a local educator, I also want a board member to be concerned with the parks and programs that our park district is responsible for.
Our students use the park district programs and parks. I know the extended time program is vital for many of our families to help with childcare. This is only one of the hundreds of programs that the park district offers. I want a board member to be passionate about all of the park district responsibilities, not just one.
Our families deserve a board member who will listen and care about all of them. Gallagher is just that person. I have known Gallagher and her family for years, meeting them for the first time when I had her grandchildren in my class. My family has personally been on the receiving end of their kindness and compassion. They are genuine people, who have been shown by Gallagher what it means to be a “servant.”
