A Carpentersville man will go to prison for sexually assaulting a child whom he knew.

Kane County Circuit Judge Donald M. Tegeler, Jr., sentenced 30-year-old Michael Martinez on Friday to 9 1⁄2 years in prison, according to a news release from the Kane County State's Attorney's Office. He is required to serve at least 85 percent of the sentence, according to Illinois Truth in Sentencing laws.

Martinez, of the 100 block of Green Street, was convicted of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, in December. Prosecutors alleged that between April and June of 2014 Martinez sexually assaulted the juvenile victim, who was younger than 13 years old, the release stated.

In addition to the prison term, Martinez also must register for life as a sex offender.

He will receive credit for more than one year that he already has spent in the Kane County jail.
