U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, responded to the Justice Department backing a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare.

Prior to being elected, she became a registered nurse and served as a senior advisor to the Department of Health and Human Services, helping implement the ACA.

"While the (Trump) Administration is working to dismantle the ACA and strip health care away from millions, I'm working to protect it," Underwood wrote in a tweet earlier this week.

Underwood introduced legislation to help make health care more affordable by reducing premiums for insurance purchased on the Health Insurance Marketplace. The proposal expands eligibility for premium tax credits beyond 400 percent of the federal poverty line. In February, Underwood also introduced legislation that would help protect Americans with pre-existing conditions by overturning a Trump Administration rule that expands limited duration insurance, commonly known as "junk plans."

About 11 million people signed up for coverage this year, slightly less than 2018, through the ACA's taxpayer-subsidized private insurance plans. While the number of new customers fell by more than half a million people, ACA supporters attribute that to Trump Administration cuts to the advertising budget and the repeal of the individual mandate, which required people to get some form of health insurance. The ACA was signed into law in March 2010.
