A Round Lake Park police officer has been charged after he allegedly struck his girlfriend's child with a paddle.

Wayman G. Vela, 55, of the 21600 block of West Grass Lake Road, unincorporated Antioch, was charged with domestic battery, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff's Office. The Class A misdemeanor typically results in less than one year in prison.

Vela is being held at the Lake County Jail with a $10,000 bail, according to the release.

On Friday, sheriff's deputies met with a social worker with the Department of Child and Family Services. A mandated reporter had told the DCFS agent that a 5-year-old girl may have been beaten, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office launched an immediate investigation. The initial investigation revealed that Vela had allegedly hit his girlfriend's daughter multiple times on her lower back with a paddle. The girl was injured and taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment, the sheriff's office said.

Police arrested Vela at 9 a.m. Saturday. He is a police officer with the Round Lake Park Police Department, which cooperated with the investigation and arrest, the sheriff's office said.

Vela is next due in court on 9 a.m. Wednesday.
