A 28-year-old Libertyville man on Sunday jumped out of a moving vehicle and then off the Route 137 overpass onto railroad tracks, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said the man appeared to be having a mental health crisis.
The incident occurred about 6:10 p.m., and deputies were dispatched to the area of Route 137 just east of I-94, in unincorporated Lake Bluff, according to a news release from Sgt. Christopher Covelli. When deputies arrived, they found the man was seriously injured.
Preliminary investigation revealed the man was driving a vehicle west on Route 137. There was a 42-year-old man in the passenger seat of the vehicle, Covelli said in a statement.
“The passenger reported as they were driving westbound, the driver for an unknown reason, opened his door and intentionally fell out of the moving vehicle into the roadway. Witnesses reported the driver then got up, jumped off the overpass, and fell onto the railroad tracks, approximately 30 feet below the roadway,” Covelli said in a statement.
The driver was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
“It appears the driver was in mental health crisis and attempted to inflict self-harm,” Covelli said.
“In addition to treatment for his injuries, medical personnel will evaluate the man’s mental health.”
