Harvard Fire Protection District trustee Jim Carbonetti received a special statuette on Tuesday commemorating his 54 years of service to the fire district.

In 1965, Harvard Fire Protection District Trustee Jim Carbonetti became involved in emergency service as a member of the city’s rescue squad.

At that time, Carbonetti said the only means of qualification you needed to serve was a special American Red Cross first aid card. After
30 years, he joined the fire district’s board of trustees.

To commemorate more than a half-century of rescue squad and administrative service to his community, trustee Roger Hugg presented Carbonetti with a special statuette at his final meeting as a fire district trustee on Tuesday.

Although many things can change in the course of 54 years, Carbonetti said one of the things he marveled at was the growth of emergency management services.

The Harvard Rescue Squad went into operation in 1956 and offered emergency first aid at fires and vehicle accidents as well as patient transports, according to the fire protection district’s website.

The squad progressed through the acquisition of advanced training and equipment to become and Advanced Life Support organization. Eventually, the the rescue squad was absorbed by the fire protection district.

Hugg said although he hasn’t spent nearly as much time serving the fire protection district, it has been a pleasure to work with Carbonetti.

An appointment process is underway to fill Carbonetti’s trustee seat. The role of treasurer, which Carbonetti carried, will be reassigned when the board elects new board officers.
