With Algonquin Township Trustee Rachael Lawrence unable to attend Wednesday’s board meeting, a vote on a resolution establishing a referendum on the November 2020 ballot to abolish the township’s road district was tabled once again.

The board discussed this resolution at its March meeting but voted to table the matter until April. However, Lawrence had advised Township Supervisor Charles Lutzow before the meeting that one of her kids was sick but had affirmed her commitment to the board.

The referendum would be tied to a law that went into effect in 2018 that gives residents the authority to abolish the highway department with a majority vote and transfer road responsibilities to the township.

The statute gives townships the ability to place a question on the ballot to let voters decide: “Shall the Road District of the Township of Algonquin be abolished with all the rights, powers, duties, assets, property, liabilities, obligations and responsibilities being assumed by the Township of Algonquin?”

In July, Lawrence brought forward the same resolution, but her motion to approve it failed.

Lawrence said in March that it would be better to pass a resolution now to allow the Democratic process to unfold into the November 2020 election.

As discussions on the budget approach, Algonquin Township Trustee David Chapman suggested making expense reports available on the township’s website so residents can stay involved and know where their tax dollars are going.
