I'll admit, I hadn't heard of Huntley's Tacos Locos until I received the TapOnIt deal on my phone recently. But I'm glad I did, because I'm always looking for new places to try.
For starters, it's in an easy-to-find location, a strip mall off Route 47 right in front of Walmart.
On a recent Wednesday early evening, we headed over with a hungry group of five. We've tried plenty of taco, Tex Mex and authentic Mexican spots in the area.
Tacos Locos certainly isn't the largest dining area around, but it's sufficient, as it was quickly clear that they do a wide variety of business, from dine in to takeout to Grubhub delivery. The staff was busy but attentive and incredibly friendly.
There's everything from bar-style seating with stools on one side to tables in the middle and tables with a booth-style back on the other side. We picked one of those.
We started with a basket of chips with salsa (you can get a chip refill for $1) along with three lemonades, a Corona with a lime and a Dos Equis.
Tacos Locos isn't trying to be authentic Mexican but more of an American version, which was fine with this group of diners. One picked the cheese quesadilla kids meal with fries ($3.99), another had the chicken quesadilla kids meal with fries ($4.99) and the third picked up a beef taco with rice and beans ($4.50).
The third of those couldn't have been happier with the choice and left impressed with not only the presentation on the red square plates but also said the rice was the best she has had. High praise for sure.
The other two gave their review with the evidence, which showed there was little left behind on the plate outside of one chicken quesadilla, which we brought home for lunch the next day.
The adult meals were more of a decision, especially mine.
My fellow diner picked out the three-taco meal ($10.99), but substituted in the avocado along with cilantro and onion.
The Tacos Locos menu is two pages and I cruised all of it before ordering. There are tacos, quesadillas, tamales, tostadas, fajitas, burritos and tortas. There also is a seven-item breakfast menu and nine-item dinner menu.
I went for the locos chimichanga dinner ($10.99) after reading up on it. Locos-style means it includes beans, steak, chorizo, pork, jalapenos and both cilantro and onions.
It was jam-packed and delicious, with sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes on the side.
Usually with a huge chimichanga like this, I try to save half for my next meal so I'm not eating too much. But this time, I couldn't stop. The meat combination meant each bite was a little different, in a good way.
Maybe they're on to something with that locos name.
