High school girls track and field: Huntley wins 4th straight county title

HUNTLEY – Huntley junior Daryn Davis really had her eyes on the triple jump record set by her friendly rival, Prairie Ridge graduate Natasha Schaffer, at the McHenry County Girls Track and Field Meet.

Davis won the triple jump, but was 3 1/2 inches short of the record. Instead, she settled for three first-place finishes as the Red Raiders cruised to the team title with 195 points Thursday.

Davis won the long and triple jumps, along with the 100 meter high hurdles. Teammate Kendal Only was second to her in the triple and 100 highs. The Red Raiders also got firsts from Mary Raclawski (800), Rachael Morrison (1,600), the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams.

“(The triple jump) wasn’t what I wanted or expected,” Davis said. “But I’m still content with it, 3 inches away. Last year was a bit of a slump, but this year it’s been going well, like gradually increasing.”

Huntley won for the fourth consecutive year. Marian Central, with strong performances in the sprints and field events, took second with 96 points. Prairie Ridge was third with 90.

McHenry and Cary-Grove, last year’s second- and third-place teams, chose to compete elsewhere this weekend.

The 100 high hurdles race excited Davis, though, as she ran a personal-best 15.18.

“I didn’t feel like it was a PR, but I guess I did it,” she said. “I was focusing on getting off the hurdles faster. I was really warm, I didn’t feel much of the cold.”

Marengo’s Bailey Bertrand threw 123-5 to win discus and 37-7 to win shot put.

Marian Central’s Regan Dineen won the high jump at 5-0, edging out teammate Molly Iden on fewer misses. Dineen also was second in long jump to Davis by 1 inch.

Marian’s Dominique Thomas won the 100 meters and teamed up with Reagan Kelly, Meaghan DiPietro and Dineen to win the 4x100 relay.

“It’s gone really well,” Thomas said. “Our 4x100 team is different this year and handoffs went really well. We executed well. The 100 I really wanted coming off of last year. I knew I had to work and executed on that.”

Crystal Lake South’s Mackenzie Aldridge won the 3,200 with a strong kick in the final 100 against Marian’s Siobahn Stoll, who was runner-up and later took third in the 1,600.
