Police have released the 911 call that Andrew Freund Sr. made at 9:04 a.m. on Thursday to report his son, Andrew “AJ” Freund, missing.
Freund Sr. said in the call that he had discovered 5-year-old AJ missing that morning after returning home from a doctor’s appointment sometime between 8:15 to 8:30 a.m.
“I got back from the doctor’s appointment, and I checked in on him to say ‘Good morning,’ ” Freund Sr. said. “And he wasn’t there.”
Freund Sr. told the dispatcher he had searched the home and garage “completely” and checked the local park, school and gas station down the road where the family sometimes took AJ to “buy treats.”
The call, which police redacted, lasted about five minutes before a police officer arrived at the home in the first block of Dole Avenue.
No one responded to knocks on the door Tuesday morning or evening as the search continued throughout Crystal Lake.
Sonar teams and planes are assisting in the search for AJ, Crystal Lake police said in a news release sent Tuesday. The McHenry County Emergency Management Agency and the Crystal Lake Park District police are assisting Crystal Lake police.
Search crews ended a search early Monday at Lippold Park due to inclement weather, but the search was expected to continue Tuesday at the park, 1251 Route 176, police said. Crews also were at Veteran Acres Park, 431 N. Walkup Ave., on Tuesday.
Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Thomas Kotlowski said Tuesday afternoon that no body had been found at Veteran Acres Park or the lake at the park.
The boat left the pond at Veterans Acres about 2 p.m. and emergency services left the area about 2:30 p.m.
Mike Fischer of Crystal Lake, who said he went to school with Cunningham between fifth and 12th grade, was one of the many spectators at Veteran Acres Park.
Fischer said he came because he has a 5-year-old child and if he were in that situation, he would want everyone in the area to be looking and to be worried.
“Stuff like this doesn’t happen here and when it does, it’s crazy,” Fischer said.
Illinois State Police assisted with the search Tuesday by piloting a plane over the area to help guide those searching on the ground, police said. Sonar teams from a mutual aid system scanned several area ponds.
Police said that wTuesday there was no new information to share on the case. AJ was reported missing on Thursday by his parents, JoAnn Cunningham and Freund Sr. Police have said Andrew was not abducted.
