A McHenry man was arrested after he allegedly broke into a Spring Grove bar, stole several bottles of alcohol and fled from police.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded about 4:10 a.m. Friday to Route 12 Bar & Grill in the 37400 block of North Route 12, Spring Grove, after a burglar alarm was set off, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

While investigating, deputies discovered fresh pry marks on the door from someone who apparently tried to force entry into the building, sheriff’s office officials said.

As more units responded, the alleged burglar, James M. Kennebeck, came out of the bar.

Officers told him to stop, but he ran away, shattering a bottle of alcohol he had hidden in his pants in the process, according to the sheriff’s office.

Police caught him after a brief foot-chase, according to the sheriff’s office.

Paramedics evaluated Kennebeck for a cut on his leg from the shattered bottle and released him back into the Lake County Sheriff’s custody, according to the sheriff’s office.

Kennebeck, 29, of the 400 block of Rand Drive, McHenry, is charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools, resisting a police officer, causing criminal damage to property and theft.

Kennebeck also had an active arrest warrant out of McHenry County for failure to appear in connection to a driving under the influence charge, according to the sheriff’s office.

He is being held at the Lake County Jail.
