High school girls track and field: Marian Central wins Class 2A Richmond-Burton Sectional

RICHMOND – Marian Central’s strength lies with its depth in the sprints and jumps, behind explosive athletes such as Regan Dineen and Dominique Thomas.

But the Hurricanes’ contingent to the IHSA Girls Track and Field State Meet next weekend at Eastern Illinois University will include a new name.

Junior Siobahn Stoll, who has competed in track’s distance races and in cross country meets with the area’s best runners, will run at state for the first time. Stoll took seconds in the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters.

The Hurricanes qualified seven athletes in nine events and won the team title Wednesday at the Class 2A Richmond-Burton Sectional with 124 points. Carmel was second with 80, followed by St. Viator (75), R-B (57) and Marengo (52). Marian and Carmel tied for the Woodstock North Sectional title last year.

“It feels great. I’m very excited and a little nervous. I’ve never competed in a big race like [state],” Stoll said. “Nothing’s hurt [this season], so I haven’t had to take any time off. I’m happy with that.”

Stoll’s career has been beset by injuries late in seasons that prevented her from running her best. Not Wednesday, as she was second to St. Viator’s Katie Castelli in both distance races.

“Siobahn is a superstar,” Hurricanes coach Andrea Radcliffe said. “She is strong and consistent and runs really hard. She knows exactly what she has to do the entire time.”

Thomas was 4 for 4, with victories in the 100, 4x100 and 4x200, and a runner-up finish in the 200.

“It’s amazing to be two-time sectional champs and going again,” Thomas said. “And we’re bringing more girls now. That’s all that matters.”

Dineen won the high and long jumps and ran a leg in the Hurricanes’ 4x100 with Reagan Kelly, Meaghan Di Pietro and Thomas. Molly Iden, Katherine Strode, Di Pietro and Thomas won the 4x200. Kelly also won the 400.

Di Pietro also qualified in the 100 at 12.71, right behind Thomas at 12.66.

“We keep saying to Meaghan, ‘Just stay with Dominique, and you’ll do just fine,’ ” Radcliffe said. “She almost caught and passed her.”

Marengo’s Bailey Bertrand won the shot put and discus. She will have a chance to repeat as a medalist in the discus. The Indians’ Jordan Parker qualified in three events with seconds in the long and triple jumps and in the 100 high hurdles.

R-B’s Sierra Satkiewicz, Jane Wisniewski, Catherine Miller and Lillie Alberts won the 4x400. Satkiewicz also won the triple jump and Alberts was second in the 400. Wisniewski, Miller, Mia Zupec and Amanda Allport qualified in the 4x800.

Satkiewicz jumped 35-0 to edge Parker (34-10 3/4) for first in the triple jump.

“It started off pretty rough,” Satkiewicz said. “I scratched twice in the prelims and the finals. So near the end, my coach and I made some adjustments, and I was confident. I envisioned what I was going to do, and I just took off and got a 35-0. I’m stoked about that.”
