A Sycamore man convicted of flying more than $1 million worth of marijuana across the country now may have flown the coop.

McHenry County Judge Robert Wilbrandt issued a warrant for Andrzej Hryniewicki’s arrest after neither he nor his attorney appeared Friday in McHenry County court for a sentencing hearing.

Reached by phone Friday, defense attorney Matthew Amarin said he had spoken with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office and was unaware that a warrant had been issued.

Amarin had not communicated with Hryniewicki and did not know where he was Friday, the attorney said.

Hryniewicki, 51, of the 27000 block of Hunters Lane, Sycamore, was charged in November 2014 with multiple drug felonies, including marijuana trafficking, after police said he transported about $1.12 million worth of marijuana in a private airplane that came from California and landed at Galt Airport in Wonder Lake.

On March 29, Hryniewicki pleaded guilty to possession with intent to deliver more than 300 pounds of marijuana. The offense typically is punishable by six to 30 years in prison.

He previously rejected a separate plea deal in June, when prosecutors offered an 11-year prison sentence. He would have faced a minimum of 12 years in prison if the case had gone to trial and he were convicted of marijuana trafficking.

The sentencing was rescheduled for May 23.
