CHARLESTON – The first day of the IHSA Girls Track and Field State Meet is critical in the attempt to get to the podium Saturday.

After a spring that has been less than exciting for any outdoor sport, Friday was a weather day these athletes could only dream about.

Host Eastern Illinois University saw the temperatures reach the mid-80s, and the performances had the pop that teams had been waiting for all season long.

Three area girls advanced to have that possibility in Class 3A, as Huntley’s Daryn Davis had the fourth-best triple jump, with a leap of 38 feet, 31/4 inches, as 12 local athletes advanced to Saturday’s finals.

In the shot put, discus, long jump and triple jump all qualifying-round

performances carry over to Saturday. In the high jump and pole vault, each athlete starts with a clean slate for Saturday’s finals.

McHenry had two qualifiers, as Jenna Pauly was one of 13 pole vaulters who cleared 11 feet to advance along with teammate Holly Vogt, who was the final of 12 qualifiers in the long jump with a leap of 18-0 1/2.

In Class 2A, Marian Central’s Regan Dineen advanced in three events. The senior advanced in the high jump, as she was one of 13 qualifiers who cleared 5-2. She also had the sixth-best long jump with a leap of 17-6. She was joined by Molly Iden, Meaghan DiPietro and Dominique Thomas in the 4x200 relay, as the foursome qualified with the sixth-best time of 1:44.39.

Marengo’s Bailey Bertrand had the third-best discus throw (135-5) and also advanced in the shot put, as the 12th qualifier with a toss of 35-9 1/4.

Teammate Jordan Parker had the 10th-best triple jump (35-8 3/4) to advance to Saturday’ final.
