High school sports roundup for Saturday, May 18

Richmond-Burton captured the Kishwaukee River Conference softball championship Saturday with a 4-2 win against Johnsburg in Johnsburg. 

The Rockets finished 10-2 in conference and a game in front of Marengo. Peyton Bannon went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, Kaitie Regnier went 2 for 4 with a double, a steal and two RBIs, and Carys De Lucia added an RBI. Bailey Jones pitched all seven innings in the conference-title clincher, allowing two runs on six hits. She struck out three.

Addison Mass went all seven innings for Johnsburg, scattering nine hits and giving up four runs (three earned) with two strikeouts and two walks. Kate Linkletter had two hits and one run scored, and Megan Patterson drove in one.

Richmond-Burton 7, Zion-Benton 0 (5 inn.): At Johnsburg, Regnier, De Lucia, Jesse Klicker, Peyton Kupsak, Rachel Baker and Caitlin Pruitt each drove in a run for R-B (17-3-1). Regnier had two hits and two runs, and Kupsak had a double.

Huntley 12, Schaumburg 0 (5 inn.): At Schaumburg, Teagan O'Rilley broke Huntley's single-season record with her 12th home run in a nonconference win for the Red Raiders (28-7). O'Rilley was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and had a double. Jori Heard pitched a shutout with seven strikeouts, allowing two hits and walking three.

Sofia Tenuta smacked two homers, finishing 2 for 4 with five RBIs. Marley Reicher was 3 for 3 with a triple and four runs scored, Taylor Zielinski was 3 for 3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored, and Courtney Mills added a double. Kendra Mitchell and Reese Hunkins (2 for 3) each had one RBI.

Libertyville 5, Marengo 3: At Marengo, Hannah Ritter had three hits in a nonconference loss for the Indians (20-15). Lauren Aubry was 2 for 3 with a double, Abby Powers had a double and an RBI, and Grace Houghton drove in one. Powers threw five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits.


Class 1A Freeport Sectional: At Freeport, Crystal Lake South won the sectional team title with freshman Jackson Schuetzle winning the singles title and Alex Freeman and Dan Minogue taking third at doubles. Schuetzle, Freeman and Minogue will compete at next week's state tournament hosted by Hersey.

Joining the Gators' state qualifiers will be Prairie Ridge's Jared Arkell and Max Kueller, who defeated teammates Hunter Fredrick and Sam Kim, to win the doubles championship. Fredrick and Kim also advanced.

Class 1A Lakes Sectional: At Lake Villa, Marian Central's doubles team of Andrew Lydon and Max Striedl celebrated a sectional title with a sweep against Grayslake North's Dante Komater and Cole Schultze, 7-6, 6-4. Also for the Hurricanes, Mike Dowling placed second at singles. Lydon, Striedl and Dowling made it through to state.

Class 2A Huntley Sectional: At Huntley, Jacobs' Kyle Burton and Thomas Nelson placed third and fourth, respectively, in singles to advance to the state tournament. Cary-Grove's Daniel Sowa and Thomas Conneen took third in doubles to advance, and Hampshire's Blake Snider and John McCann were fourth in doubles and also advanced.

Class 2A Rockford Auburn Sectional: At Rockford, Crystal Lake Central's John Wallace placed second at singles, losing to Rockford Auburn's Quinten Nevenhoven, 6-0, 6-2, in the championship match. Wallace will be joined by teammates Jared Otlewis and Luke Reupert (third place) and Nathan Kopp and Kolbe Wallin (fourth place) at next week's state tournament. Auburn beat Central by a point, 15-14, for the sectional title.


Huntley 5, Grant 4: At Fox Lake, Zach Model had a double and drove in two runs in a nonconference win for the Raiders (26-8). Michael Talesky added a double, and Evan Tocmo drove in one. Hunter Rumachik picked up the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with a strikeout and no hits allowed.

Johnsburg 7, Woodstock 4: At Woodstock, the Skyhawks (8-17, 6-10 KRC) beat the Blue Streaks (12-14, 7-10) in KRC play. Johnsburg's Ryan Linkletter went 4 for 4 with two runs and three steals, Matt Harris scored twice, and Zach Toussaint, Josh Notriano, Evan Frasch, Jeff Pokuta and Casey Burnopp (2 for 3) each had an RBI. Max Kegel added a double and picked up the win, allowing three runs in four innings.

Logan List was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Blue Streaks, Jacob Waryck was 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI, Alex Wojnicki drove in one run, and Clark Shulfer had two hits. Evan Geske had a double.


State Tournament: At Carlyle Lake, Johnsburg placed 14th with a two-day total of 10 pounds, 7 ounces. The Skyhawks' boat reeled in two fish on the second day for 2 pounds, 4 ounces. Johnsburg caught five fish totaling 8 pounds, 3 ounces Friday. Highland captured the title at 21 1/16 pounds.
