5 McHenry students taken to hospital after bus crash

A school bus crash at the intersection of Front and Anne streets Friday afternoon required five McHenry School District 15 students to be transported to the hospital for precautionary measures, according to a news release from the McHenry Police Department.

Police responded to the scene at 4:08 p.m. and determined that the school bus was attempting a right turn onto Front Street when it struck a northbound 2002 Subaru Impreza, the release said.

A total of 17 students ages 7 to 11 were on the bus during the crash. Five were transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital as a precaution, while the rest were reunited with their parents at the scene, the release said.

The driver of the Subaru also was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital after reporting a minor injury.

The roadway was closed for about one hour while an investigation was conducted.

The driver of the bus, 54-year-old Gary L. Garwood of McHenry, was cited for improper turning, the release said.
