Ohio man charged with attempted murder after shots fired at trucker at Hampshire gas station

An Ohio man is facing an attempted murder charge following an incident at a Hampshire truck stop this weekend.

Hampshire Police Department responded about 6:50 p.m. Saturday to a shots fired call at the Travel Centers of America truck stop on Route 20. Two truck drivers had been arguing when one took out a handgun and began to shoot, according to a news release from the police department.

William M. Lutz, 57, of Dayton, Ohio, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery, armed violence and criminal damage to property, according to the release.

The two truckers had been arguing because Lutz believed the victim's truck was blocking the road. Lutz went back to his truck and got a .45-caliber handgun when the victim retreated to his truck, according to the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

Lutz fired two rounds at the driver's-side door. A single bullet grazed the victim and caused bleeding. A passenger was in the front seat. The truck also was damaged, according to the sheriff's office.

Lutz left the scene following the shooting. He was later found in his parked semi-truck on the I-90 off-ramp at Route 47.He had swallowed 30 pills in an apparent suicide attempt, according to the sheriff's office.

Huntley Police Department issued a Nixle alert to area residents about 8:50 p.m. Saturday night warning drivers to avoid the I-90 and Route 47 exchange.

Kane County Sheriff's office deployed its Special Weapons and Tactics unit and took Lutz into custody.

He is held at the Kane County jail on a $750,000 bail. He must pay $75,000 to be released.

If Lutz posts bond, he is to surrender all firearms to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, he is not to consume intoxicating substances, he is to take prescription medications only as prescribed and he is to have no contact with the victims, according to the sheriff's office.

If convicted of the most serious charge, Lutz could face six to 30 years in prison.
