Although there still is more than a month to apply for a rebate of Valley Hi Nursing Home surplus funds, more than 35,000 people already have submitted applications, according to a news release from McHenry County Board Chairman Jack Franks.
Eligible homeowners will have until July 31 to apply for a portion of the $15 million in surplus funds the County Board agreed to rebate in April. Doing so will allow these homeowners to recoup almost 30% of the county government’s share of last year’s property tax bill.
Franks said in the release that the response from county homeowners has been phenomenal.
“Homeowners have applied for slightly more than $6 million of the $15 million that the County Board voted to allocate,” Franks said. “We’re safely and responsibly rebating a portion of a significant excess fund reserve while at the same time improving and expanding Valley Hi’s services.”
Eligible residents must have owned and occupied taxable, homestead-exempt residential property April 16 – the day the rebate was approved – and paid their 2017 property taxes in full. About 88,000 properties could qualify for the rebate under these conditions.
Qualifying homeowners can apply online at mchenrycountyil.gov or pick up hard copies of the application at the McHenry County Treasurer’s Office, 2100 N. Seminary Ave.
Checks should be mailed to eligible homeowners in late September or early October, according to the release. Any unclaimed funds will be returned to Valley Hi.
