82-year-old man crashes into tree in Cary, police say

An 82-year-old man crashed his vehicle into a tree after suffering a medical emergency Monday, Cary police said.

Deputy Chief of Police Jim Fillmore said the crash happened about 10:34 a.m. Monday on Cary Algonquin Road at Fox Trails Drive. The Cary Fire Protection District also responded.

According to a witness, the driver was heading south on Cary Algonquin Road when he swerved off the west side of the road, traveled 1,000 feet and hit a sign, Fillmore said. The driver then swerved back onto the road, hit a guardrail, drove into a ditch and then hit a tree, Fillmore said.

The man refused further medical treatment after being examined by emergency medical services, Fillmore said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no one was injured. No citations were issued, Fillmore said.
