McHenry Township meeting scheduled to address bus program

Question to keep bus program may appear on 2020 primary ballot

A request to reconsider the elimination of McHenry Township’s senior bus program will be brought up during a special annual township meeting – where residents will be granted voting authority – scheduled for Aug. 5.

Annual township meetings are scheduled for the second Tuesday in April. However, McHenry Township Supervisor Craig Adams said a special meeting can be called by any 15 registered voters within the township at any time they so choose.

The McHenry Township Board voted last month to eliminate the senior bus program despite the protests of numerous senior and disabled residents who rely on the transportation. The service will end Nov. 30.

Trustees voting to eliminate the program pointed to high property taxes as a reason to cut the service. Adams, who voted against eliminating the program, said the cost for the program is about $7.68 a property tax bill each year.

The decision outraged many residents and prompted some to protest outside of McHenry Township Trustee Bob Anderson’s barbershop in Wonder Lake earlier this month.

Consideration of an advisory referendum about the bus program that could appear on the March 17, 2020, primary ballot will be voted on at the meeting.

The question to be voted on during the annual township meeting will read, “Shall the McHenry Township fund, operate and manage a McHenry Township senior and disabled transportation program for all McHenry Township senior and disabled residents?”

As an advisory referendum, the township board will not be bound to reverse their decision if a majority of voters are in favor of it. However, if voters were in favor of the referendum, Adams said he would hope that the will of the people may change some board members’ minds on eliminating the bus program.

A simple majority of electors at the special meeting would need to vote in favor of the referendum to get it on the March 2020 ballot, Adams said.

Another agenda item requests that the McHenry Township Board of Trustees reconsider their vote to eliminate the program and place it as an agenda item for discussion and action on its next regularly scheduled meeting.

The special township meeting will be at
7 p.m. at McHenry Township Town Hall, 3703 N. Richmond Road.
