Teen taken to hospital after being struck by McHenry County Sheriff's vehicle in Crystal Lake

A 14-year-old boy was taken to the hospital Saturday after an on-duty McHenry County Sheriff's vehicle struck his bike, according to the Crystal Lake Police Department.

First responders were called about 3:40 p.m. to the intersection of Routes 176 and 31 for the reported crash, Crystal Lake Police Sgt. Mike Bennett said.

A sheriff's deputy was traveling east on Route 176 when the boy tried to cross the road on his bicycle, Bennett said. There is no crosswalk in the area where the crash occurred, he said.

The teen was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Bennett said.

Eastbound Route 176 was shut down while Crystal Lake police investigated the incident.

No citations were issued, and the investigation is ongoing, Bennett said.

He said he did not know the name of the deputy involved in the incident.
