A traffic stop early Tuesday ended in a two-vehicle crash after police said a Willow Springs man ran a red light while fleeing police in a stolen car.

Officers with the Marengo Police Department tried to pull over a speeding Ford Fusion about 2:55 a.m. Monday, according to a news release. Through their investigation, officers learned the car had been reported stolen out of Winnebago County, Marengo police officer Andrew Kjellgren said.

The driver, later identified as 40-year-old Maxwell E. Johnson, ignored the police vehicle and ran a red light at Grant Highway and South State Street. The Ford collided with another vehicle that was carrying two people, Kjellgren said.

Each of the passengers was evaluated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The Ford came to rest against a building, causing minor damage, according to the release.

Johnson, of the 100 block of Willow Road, is charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing, reckless driving, speeding, driving without a license, disregarding a traffic control device and operating an uninsured vehicle.

He remained at the McHenry County Jail Tuesday afternoon. A judge will set Johnson’s bond at a hearing Wednesday morning.
