A 40-year-old Marengo man is due in court Tuesday after police said he sexually assaulted a young girl whom he knew.
The charges against Silvestre Hernandez-Mandez stem from a July 18 report to the Marengo Police Department, according to a news release.
After an investigation into the claims, police arrested Hernandez-Mandez on a warrant Friday. He remained at the McHenry County Jail on Monday afternoon on $300,000 bond.
Hernandez-Mandez, of the 600 block of North Page Street, is charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and aggravated criminal sexual assault.
If convicted of the most serious charge, predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, he could be sentenced to between six and 30 years in prison.
During a brief appearance Saturday at the jail, Judge Joel Berg appointed the McHenry County Public Defender’s Office to represent Hernandez-Mandez. His attorney could not immediately be reached to comment on the charges.
