A Gilberts man has been charged after he fired more than a dozen shots from an AK-47 rifle after hearing giggling outside his home near Interstate 90 and Route 72 early Sunday, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Steven Mendoza, 24, of the 100 block of Park Court, Gilberts, is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.
Kane County prosecutors said that Mendoza was upset when he heard giggling outside his window about 2 a.m. Sunday.
He then fired 14 shots from the rifle into the air toward I-90 and Route 72, which is near his home, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
His neighbors had a group of people in their backyard at the time, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
Mendoza appeared in court Sunday and Associate Judge Linda Abrahamson set his bail at $10,000. Mendoza must post $1,000 to be released. If he is released, he must temporarily surrender his guns, according to the state’s attorney’s office.
If convicted, Mendoza could face one to three years in prison.
Mendoza is next expected in court at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Kane County Judicial Center.
