Pearl Street Commons will host its grand opening ceremony Monday.
The newly constructed, 25-unit apartment building, at 3512 Pearl St. in McHenry, will provide housing and support services to veterans and people with disabilities.
Chicago-based Full Circle Communities, a nonprofit housing developer, is the agency behind the project and will partner with McHenry-based Transforming Lives through Service to Veterans and Evanston-based Over the Rainbow Association to refer clients and provide on-site services such as transportation and benefits assistance, job skills development and health programs, according to Full Circle.
Chicago-based Novak Construction built the 24,000-square-foot, three-story building, which has 22 one-bedroom units and three two-bedroom units plus amenities such as an elevator, library, community room, business center, laundry and storage rooms, and an outdoor patio, according to Full Circle Communities.
An opening celebration will take place beginning 10 a.m. at Pearl Street Commons.
Speakers will include Joshua Wilmoth, president and CEO of Full Circle Communities; McHenry Mayor Wayne Jett; Christine Moran, managing director of the multifamily housing department with the Illinois Housing Development Authority; state Sen. Craig Wilcox, R-McHenry; Loren Harris, Chicago director for U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-IL; and U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, according to Full Circle Communities.
The speeches will be followed by an award ceremony and property tours, according to Full Circle Communities.
The project was met with some resistance in 2017 when Full Circle Communities began requesting approval for the proposal from local boards such as the McHenry Planning and Zoning Commission and McHenry City Council. Residents were concerned about a high-density building located close to single-family residential homes.
Local officials ultimately determined the need for this type of project outweighed potential problems.
The building is located in McHenry’s downtown in close proximity to public transportation, shopping, dining and Veterans Memorial Park.
