Northwest Herald Athletes of the Week for Sept. 1-7


Madeline Timmerman, Crystal Lake Central

Crystal Lake Central won the Jacobs Invitational over the weekend, going 5-0 and beating Fox Valley Conference rival Cary-Grove in the championship match. Timmerman finished the tournament with 20 kills and 19 blocks and leads the Tigers in kills and blocks for the season.

Timmerman was voted as the Northwest Herald Female Athlete of the Week by readers for her performance. She answered questions from Northwest Herald sports writer Alex Kantecki. 

What was most memorable about your team’s performance last weekend at the Jacobs Invite?

Timmerman: I would say our last game in the championship against Cary-Grove. It was a really fun game, and we worked well together.

Who is the best athlete in your family?

Timmerman: I don’t really know how to answer that. My mom, Lauren, was a pretty good athlete back in the day. 

Who is your favorite professional athlete?

Timmerman: April Ross. She’s a beach volleyball player. 

What is your favorite class?

Timmerman: Math. 

Which musical act would you most like to see in concert?

Timmerman: Luke Bryan. 

What is your dream job?

Timmerman: As of right now, probably a lawyer. 

What is something that scares you?

Timmerman: I’m kind of scared of bridges. Falling off a bridge. 

Where would you most like to go on a vacation?

Timmerman: Australia. I’ve always wanted to go there. 

You just won a million dollars. What is the first thing you would buy?

Timmerman: I would donate part of it to charity.

What are three of your favorite TV shows?

Timmerman: “Big Brother,” “Gossip Girl,” “13 Reasons Why”

What is your biggest pet peeve?

Timmerman: Being late. I like to be on time or early. 

What is a sport you are bad at?

Timmerman: Bowling. I’m a terrible bowler.


Ryan Jones, Marian Central

Marian Central senior Ryan Jones has run two races at the challenging Veteran Acres Park course in Crystal Lake and has two third-place finishes.

Jones took third in 17:00 at the McHenry County Cross Country Meet to start the season Aug. 31, then came back with a 16:31.9 in last week’s Crystal Lake South Invitational.

Jones was voted as the Northwest Herald Male Athlete of the Week by readers. He answered these questions from sports writer Joe Stevenson.

What do you remember most about your performance last weekend at the Crystal Lake South Invitational?

Jones: I remember finishing the race and being proud of the time drop form running the same course as the week before.

Who is the most famous person you have taken a picture with?

Jones: I took a picture with (2007 Jacobs graduate) Evan Jager after his first Olympics (London in 2012).

What is your best sports fashion tip?

Jones: Put your watch on your other wrist for a few days to avoid a crazy tan on one arm.

What is your favorite class?

Jones: Gym, because we get to go outside, and it is a nice break in the day.

If you could have a sandwich named after you, what would be on it and what would you call it?

Jones: It would just be turkey and cheese, and I’d call it the Regular Ryan.

If you could spend a week working out with any runner, who would it be?

Jones: I would want to run with Usain Bolt because his speed is unmatched.

What is one of your biggest pet peeves?

Jones: My dog (Beckett) steals my socks, and I have to chase her to get them back.

Do you have any hidden talent?

Jones: I have a strong car karaoke game.

What are some of your favorite TV shows?

Jones: I love “The Office” and “The Walking Dead.”

What is the toughest aspect of running?

Jones: It’s keeping up your endurance for long periods of time.
