High school sports roundup for Saturday, Sept. 14

Harvard traveled 175 miles Saturday to take on Macomb at Galesburg High School in a football game.

All three hours of the trip were worth it, as the Hornets defeated the Bombers, 33-13, for their first victory of the season.

Fullback Damon Mueller rushed 29 times for 224 yards and a touchdown to lead the Hornets (1-2). Mueller also returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown and threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Austin Kohley.

Quarterback Jacob Stanley ran for a pair of touchdowns as the Hornets racked up 464 yards of offense, 413 of which came on the ground.

Stanley’s two touchdown runs came in the first half, then Mueller’s pass to Kohley made it 20-7 at halftime. Mueller’s interception return made it 27-7, then the teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Antonio Rodriguez led the way for Harvard’s defense with 12 tackles. Macomb gained 292 total yards.

Westminster Christian 27, Alden-Hebron 0: At Elgin, the Giants were shut out in their eight-man football game. The Giants (1-1) had three fumbles, two interceptions and 14 penalties for 125 yards.

A-H returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but it was called back for an illegal block in the back.

Thomas Webber was 7-of-11 passing for 125 yards with two interceptions. Webber had 38 yards rushing and TJ Pauly had 35 on the ground. Pauly had three catches for 54 yards, Mike Ellison had 47 yards receiving and Tyler Cunningham added a reception for 25 yards.

The Giants finished with 194 yards of total offense.

GIRLS GOLF

Stillman Valley Invite: At Prairie View in Byron, Crystal Lake Central co-op's Renata Petersen and Molly Lyne finished second and third, respectively, to lead the Tigers to a runner-up finish.

Peterson recorded a 3-over-par 75 and Lyne was two shots back with a 77. Harlem's Brighton Young earned medalist honors with a 74. Guilford co-op placed first with a team score of 339, Central co-op (359) was second, Huntley (361) was third, and Jacobs (391) was fourth out of 11 teams.

Jacobs was led by a sixth-place finish from Lauren Kempf (81). Golden Eagles teammate Roslyn Leitner was seventh with an 83. Huntley was led by Nina Shaffer (86), who tied for eighth, Molly Baker (89), Taylor Stephenson (91) and Lorelei Oomens (95).

Joella Greeley added a 92 for Central co-op.

BOYS GOLF

Zion-Benton Invite: At Shepherd's Crook in Zion, Crystal Lake South finished runner-up as a team with a 301. Will Stewart placed fifth individually with a 73. John Lishchynsky, Ricky Falbo and Jack Roberts tied for 13th with 76s.

Huntley was 12th out of 19 teams with a 326. The Raiders were led by Trevor Wolinsky (76), Josh Good (81), Trevor Book (82), and Danny Sheedy and Cole Modrich with 87s.

BOYS SOCCER

Timothy Christian 2, Woodstock 1: At the Pepsico Showdown in Joliet, the Blue Streaks dropped their first game of the season against the Trojans. Oscar Escorza scored for Woodstock (8-1), and Stephan Turskey made 16 saves.

Dundee-Crown 2, Thornton 0: At the Pepsico Showdown in Joliet, Julian Saldana scored goals in the 30th and 32nd minutes for the Chargers (6-10) in a shutout against the Wildcats. Nathan Becker made six saves.

Prairie Ridge 2, Grayslake Central 0: At Grayslake, Michael Thompson scored on a penalty kick and Cade Collins had the Wolves' second goal in a victory against the Rams. Owen Erickson had 15 saves and provided the assist on Collins' goal.

Huntley 3, Homewood-Flossmoor 0: At the Pepsico Showdown in Joliet, Bryce Dalton, Thomas Rodriguez and Sam Bellantuono each scored for the Red Raiders (3-4-1) in their tournament opener. Ethan Kornas had two saves in 70 minutes for Huntley.

Harvest Christian 1, Marengo 0: At Elgin, the Indians outshot the Lions, but could not find the back of the net in a nonconference loss.

Morton 2, Crystal Lake South 1: At the Pepsico Showdown in Joliet, Garrett Schneider had the only goal for the Gators (5-2-2) in the opening loss to the Potters. Carson Hill had seven saves for South. Morton's Andres Calderon had two penalty-kick saves.

Plainfield Classic: At Plainfield, Crystal Lake Central (2-2-1) fell to Hinsdale South, 3-2. Mason Pfeifer and Billy Cummings each scored for the Tigers. Jake Nelson and Elijah Burleson added assists and Joey Moore had seven saves.

Hampshire 1, Whitney Young 0: At the Pepsico Showdown in Joliet, Sawyer Shores scored the game's only goal, assisted by Nathan Ludwig, in the Whip-Purs tournament-opening victory. Kyle Schultz was in goal for the shutout.

Benet 5, Marian Central 0: At Lisle, the Hurricanes were shut out in the East Suburban Catholic Conference game. Caleb Taylor had 11 saves and Matthew Jablonski had six.

VOLLEYBALL

West Chicago Tournament: At West Chicago, Woodstock (13-1) suffered its first loss of the season, but ended the tournament with a 25-17, 25-20 sweep against Bartlett in the third-place match.

Hanna Berry had seven kills and eight digs against Bartlett and finished the tournament with 46 kills. Lauryn Hahn had six kills, seven digs and two aces in the third-place match, Sophie Wicker had 14 assists, six kills and nine digs, and Emma Brand tallied five blocks.

The Streaks fell to St. Viator, 15-25, 25-16, 25-21, in the semifinals. Woodstock was 3-0 in pool play with wins over Fenton, 25-17, 25-18, Elgin, 25-12, 25-9, and West Chicago, 25-18, 25-20.

Dundee-Crown (2-8) was 2-2 with wins over Plainfield South, 25-23, 25-20, and Fenton, 25-17, 18-25, 25-20. The Chargers lost to St. Viator, 25-13, 21-25, 17-15, and Bartlett, 25-21, 25-20. Jenna Brown had 93 assists and 13 aces in the tournament, MacKenzie Field had 39 kills and five blocks, Makena Wesol had 25 kills and Olivia Miller had 20 kills and five aces.

Round Lake Invite: At Round Lake, Marengo's Lillie Simons tallied 32 kills, 22 blocks and five aces for the Indians, who were 3-2 with victories against Elk Grove, 25-20, 27-25, Waukegan, 25-20, 25-14, and Round Lake. Marengo (8-5-2) lost to Niles North, 25-12, 25-12, and Wheeling, 25-21, 25-13.

Kaetlyn Jeschke had 60 digs and four aces, Alexis Kunde had 37 kills and 10 aces, and Isabella Simonini had 55 assists and 10 blocks. Mia Lulinski had 10 blocks, Dani Hartmann had 28 digs, and Jenna Turner had 22 digs.

GIRLS TENNIS

Huntley Quint: At Huntley, Ruhi Gulati (No. 1 singles), Elaina Hibbeler (No. 2 singles), and Kylie Phommasack and Talia Duffy (No. 1 doubles) all went 4-0 to lead the Raiders to first place.

Kareena Patel and Dyllan Cash (No. 2 doubles) and Sunni Kwon and Ela Hontanosas (No. 3 doubles) both took third, going 2-2.

Crystal Lake Central Quad: At Crystal Lake, Woodstock North went 3-0 with wins against Crystal Lake Central, 3-2, Hoffman Estates, 5-0, and Guilford, 4-1. North's 12-1 record is the best start in program history.

Aly Cullotta finished 3-0 at No. 1 singles for the Thunder and Sophia Ferru was 3-0 at No. 2 singles. Kaitlyn Mauck and Maggie Thomas also went undefeated at No. 3 doubles. Juliana Conrad and Kirsten Morey were 2-1 at No. 1 doubles for North.

Central was 2-1 win wins over Guilford, 4-1, and Hoffman Estates, 4-1. Kenna Kessler and Emma Grindstaff were 3-0 at No. 1 doubles for the Tigers (7-4), and Haley Steinberg and Haley Benard went 3-0 at No. 2 doubles. Ellyse Cruz and Lexi Holtkamp (No. 3 doubles) were 2-1.

Buffalo Grove Invite: At Buffalo Grove, Cary-Grove's No. 1 doubles team of Alina Krembuszewski and Jazzy Flashing was runner-up to lead the Trojans, who placed sixth out of eight teams. Kate Larry and Grace O'Malley also placed second at No. 3 doubles for C-G.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Peoria Central Invitational: At Detweiiler Park in Peoria, Marian Central’s Peter Walsdorf finished 10th and Ryan Jones was 18th in the Class 2A race on the course where the state meet will be held in November.

Walsdorf ran in 15:33, Jones finished in 15:58. Woodstock’s Jack Hansen was 34th, Hampshire’s Aidan Gonzalez and Darius Nguepi were 51st and 52nd, and Marengo’s Luke Chaffin was 54th in the 2A race.

In the 3A race, Cary-Grove’s Maxum Caesar was the top local finisher at 41st. Jacobs’ Andrew Doetsch was 59th and McHenry’s Jessi Garcia and Carlos Montes were 76th and 83rd. McHenry finished 20th out of 44 teams.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Peoria Central Invitational: At Detweiiler Park in Peoria, Marian Central’s Siobhan Stoll took fifth place in 18:07.3 in the Class 2A race on the course where the state meet will be run in November.

Woodstock’s Shannon Koscinski was 69th.

In Class 3A, McHenry’s Lydia Zancho took 19th in 18:20. Cary-Grove’s Morgan Dieschbourg was 31st and Maggie Mason was 38th. Ada Saletnek was 73rd as the Trojans finished 13th out of 33 teams.

Jacobs was 14th as a team, led by Elisabeth Kania (59th) and Kelly Carpenter (62nd).
