Two people are dead and another injured after a car chase that originated in Wisconsin ended in flames on Route 173 in Fox Lake, police said.
The crash occurred about 7:20 p.m. Sunday on Route 173 near North Converse Road in Fox Lake. Preliminary investigations indicate that a 28-year-old man, with two 18-year-old women passengers, was speeding in Genoa City, Wisconsin, driving a 1994 Toyota Camry.
A Genoa City police officer tried to pull the man over, but he refused to stop and a chase began. The pursuit down Route 173 went over the state border continuing through Spring Grove, where Spring Grove police joined the chase, according to the Fox Lake Police Department.
The man lost control of the car in Fox Lake and hit several trees. The Toyota then caught fire, according to the police department.
A passing motorist and the officers got the man and teenagers out of the car and the three were transported to local hospitals. The driver and one of the teens were pronounced dead at the hospital. The other teen is in serious condition, according to the police department.
Fox Lake Police Department and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team are investigating the incident. Fox Lake officers didn’t participate in the chase.
