Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper has identified the two people who died in a fiery car wreck after a police chase Sunday.
Theopolis Owens, 28, of Chicago and Kayla Crews, 18, of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, both died of blunt force trauma because of the crash. Toxicology reports are pending, according to the coroner.
Owens was facing felony charges in Lake County after a May arrest when he was allegedly driving with a suspended license, court records show.
The crash happened about
7:20 p.m. Sunday at Route 173 near North Converse Road in Fox Lake. Preliminary investigations indicate that Owens was speeding in a 1994 Toyota Camry through Genoa City, Wisconsin, and two 18-year-old women were passengers.
A Genoa City police officer tried to pull Owens over, but Owens refused to stop and a chase began. The pursuit down Route 173 went over the state border continuing through Spring Grove, where Spring Grove police joined the chase, according to the Fox Lake Police Department.
Owens lost control of the car in Fox Lake and hit several trees. The Toyota then caught fire, according to the police department.
Owens and Crews were pronounced dead at a local hospital after the crash. The second passenger, who has been identified as Mya Janczak, 18, of Waukegan, suffered serious injuries.
