MCC to host ‘Cannabis in the Workplace’ session Dec. 4

McHenry County College will host “Navigating Cannabis in the Workplace” next month for employers seeking to learn more about how new marijuana laws will affect the work environment.

This session is scheduled for 7:30 to 9 a.m. Dec. 4 at the Shah Center, 4100 W. Shamrock Lane, McHenry. The session will be hosted in partnership with Stateline SHRM.

Illinois will become the 11th state to allow recreational use of cannabis come Jan. 1. Possession or use of marijuana still is illegal under federal law. Regardless of state law, federal rules require substance testing – including for marijuana – of certain industries such as trucking, mass transit, airlines and rail workers. Companies with federal contracts and grants, as well as federal agencies, must have a drug use policy that is enforced.

Session attendees will explore how marijuana laws affect the workplace and learn about drug use and testing policies, including the ability to implement or maintain a zero-tolerance drug policy. During the seminar, attendees will receive information about employer liability, right to privacy, company policies, safety and reasonable suspicion relating to marijuana in the workplace. This session will be presented by labor lawyer Carlos Arévalo, a partner at SmithAmundsen, and a drug recognition expert, Sgt. Adam Carson of the Lake in the Hills Police Department.

This session is free, but registration is required. Contact MCC Shah Center at shahcenter@mchenry.edu or 815-455-8593 to register.
