Rial Bates: Chamber events help spread good cheer

I am fortunate in many ways to work for McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce. One of the reasons for this good fortune is that as head of the Chamber, I have the privilege of working among those who are heroes and heroines in the area.

These people motivate me. One such person was Frank E. Low. Although I did not have the advantage of knowing Frank personally, I do have the benefit as head of the Chamber to honor this gentleman through an award that exemplifies his fine qualities.

Low was a true legend in McHenry who inspired people to selflessly give back to the area. Of note is Frank’s love for the Fiesta Days Parade which he built into a spell-binding event in McHenry complete with drum and bugle corps and the show that followed.

He also is celebrated with the name of this award because Frank was a key player in the McHenry Area Chamber’s early years, including a stint as its president. Frank was a strong ambassador for the organization. Of great note was Frank’s enthusiasm to be the first in the community to reach out to new businesses. During this time, Frank E. Low was the owner of Frank E. Low Insurance Co., a successful company that now is known as Reese Insurance Group.

Every year in honor of Frank E. Low, the McHenry Area Chamber awards an individual who shares his spirit of giving back to the community. The award is given publicly to an honoree at the Chamber’s annual January dinner.

The honoree and his or her guest will be our special guests at that event. Now surely many are out there who know individuals who stand out among us all by their dedication and commitment to others. We are looking for these people to be nominated for this award. Forms can be obtained at mchenrychamber.com or by calling 815-385-4300. The deadline is 5 p.m. Dec. 9.

Mixers coming up include our Christmas Ugly Sweater Party mixer Dec. 10. There will be many prizes given at this fun event. On Dec. 19, Steffans is hosting a mixer in honor of the holidays. January brings not only cold weather but also mixers such as Grandma’s Wine Bar and Deli on Dec. 14, and Monday Night Football Pre-Superbowl Mixer at Halftime Pizza. Some lucky person will leave the football mixer $500 dollars richer. Could be you. All mixers begin at 5 p.m. and last until
7 p.m.

On Jan. 25, the McHenry Area Chamber is hosting The Pirates Ball, Night of the Black Pearl. Join the Who’s Who of McHenry as we enjoy this all-inclusive event of filet mignon, dancing, sweet table and $1,000 raffles held at D’Andreas Banquets.

If you haven’t registered for McHenry-Opoly Community and Business EXPO, you may want to do so. The McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce works hard to draw multiple demographic groups into the family centered event. Lots of community drawing entertainment and fun family games with prizes will be on hand for all to enjoy. McHenry-Opoly EXPO is Feb. 22.
