To the Editor:
Amid all the issues that are grabbing the headlines these days, such as impeachment and war, we should not forget the fact that there are local issues that affect us that need to be addressed by our representatives in Washington. One that comes to mind is gun violence.
The House of Representatives passed legislation ( HR-8 ) The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019. This legislation, co-sponsored by 14th District Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-Naperville) requires background checks on every gun sale including unlicensed gun dealers. Also included was a carve-out for guns given as gifts, or used as hunting, target shooting or self defense. This legislation is a common sense approach to make us all safer from gun violence. It also closes a loop hole that has allowed criminals to purchase guns.
After passing the House, this bill has been sitting in the Senate since March 4, 2019; almost a year with no action. Sound familiar?
Our U.S Congressional representatives for McHenry county; Lauren Underwood and Sean Casten, are working hard and taking tough votes in an effort to make us safer and improve our lives. We need to support their efforts and speak out and vote.
Remember our voice is our vote.
