McHenry County College is hosting sessions of free tax assistance and e-filing of federal and state tax returns through April 15 with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Clinic.
Walk-in hours are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in Room A102 at the college, located at 8900 U.S. Highway 14 in Crystal Lake. The clinic is closed on March 23, 25, and 28. This clinic is for qualified individuals or households with incomes less than $65,000.
An additional tax assistance clinic is located in Harvard at Brown Bear Day Care, 27001 McGuire Road. It is open from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays through April 6, although this clinic, too, is closed on March 23 and 27. There will be no walk-in tax prep at the Harvard location. Qualified individuals may drop off and pick up their tax returns a week later.
All tax forms will be provided. Participants should bring a valid photo ID for main taxpayers on the tax return; Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number cards for all family members reported on the tax return, which is mandatory; all 2019 earnings statements, also known as W2s, and other income and expense documents; a copy of last year’s return if available; and bank account information for direct deposits.
Other documents to bring, if applicable, include: tuition statements and expenses, known as 1098-T; mortgage interest statements, known as 1098; their real estate tax bill and cancellation of debt or bankruptcy information.
Additional services available with one's appointment include banking and financial counseling, assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form, and filing an application for a ITIN.
