High school sports roundup for Thursday, Feb. 20

Marian Central advanced six of its seven competitors to the Class 2A semifinals Thursday at the first day of the IHSA Wrestling State Tournament at the State Farm Center in Champaign.

The Hurricanes’ Dylan Connell (170 pounds) and Daniel Valeria (132) both remained unbeaten for the season, winning their first two matches to reach the semifinals. Elon Rodriguez (120), Scott Burke (126), Bryce Shelton (138) and Niko Lopez (182) also won their first two matches.

Connell, a junior, is 42-0 and seeking his third state championship and won by pin and technical fall. Valeria moved to 43-0 with a pair of decisions, allowing only one point in his two matches.

Crystal Lake South sent three of its four wrestlers into the 2A semifinals, including Christian Olsen, the defending 113-pound state champion, who won his matches by a combined score of 22-2.

The Gators also have Peyton Timmons (145) and Shane Moran (152). Timmons won a close match, 3-1, then won, 11-0 in the second round. Moran beat Hampshire’s Nathan Larson, 3-1, in a Fox Valley Conference matchup in the first round. Moran won, 11-2, in the second round.

Also in 2A, Prairie Ridge’s Kyle Koelblinger (195) and Crystal Lake Central’s Caden Ernd (160) fought their ways into the semis, each with a pair of victories.

In Class 1A, Harvard’s Nik Jimenez won by pin and a 10-3 decision to make the 126-pound semifinals. Johnsburg’s Justin Peake (182) pinned his two opponents to reach the semis. Peake took third last year.

In Class 3A, five of Huntley’s six wrestlers advanced through the first round. The 3A quarterfinal matches will be Friday morning.

Huntley’s Jacob Jensen (113), Sam Spencer (126), Jeremy Jakowitsch (138), David Ferrante (170) and Ryder Hunkins (195) all advanced. Ferrante is the defending state champion at 170.

Two other local competitors won their first-round matches. McHenry’s Brody Hallin pinned his opponent at 152 and Jacobs’ Ryan Golnick won, 8-3, at 220 pounds.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Huntley 34, Hononegah 30: At the Class 4A Guilford Regional championship in Rockford, Kamsi Nwogu scored 13 points as the Red Raiders (20-13) won.

Carley Faulkner and Raquel Radermacher each added six points for Huntley.

The regional title is Huntley’s first since 2016, when the Raiders won their fourth consecutive championship. They meet Dundee-Crown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Huntley Sectional’s second semifinal. Barrington meets Rockford Auburn in the first game at 6 p.m.

Burlington Central 56, St. Francis 32: At the Class 3A Burlington Central Regional championship, Elana Wells scored 22 points and handed out four assists as the Rockets (29-4) won their first regional title since 2016.

Kat Schmidt added 12 for Burlington, which faces Sycamore on Tuesday at the Hampshire Sectional.
