McHenry man who barricaded himself in Crystal Lake apartment faces child pornography charges

24-year-old arrested in Crystal Lake on 2 active arrest warrants

A 24-year-old McHenry man was taken into custody Friday after barricading himself inside the bathroom of a home and threatening officers with a knife, Crystal Lake police said.

Officers responded about 4:30 p.m. to the 500 block of Darlington Lane after a report of a burglary in process, according to a news release from the Crystal Lake Police Department.

Upon arriving, police found Matthew R. Reder, who immediately barricaded himself in the bathroom of the home.

Reder was charged with three Class X felonies: predatory criminal sexual assault, production of child pornography and possession of child pornography. He was also charged with possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony, and four Class A misdemeanors: aggravated assault, obstructing a peace officer, criminal trespass to residence and criminal damage to property.

Reder was transported to McHenry County Jail to await a bond hearing.

On Friday night, authorities set up a perimeter around the residence and continued to talk with Reder to try to deescalate the situation. After hours of negotiations, Reder surrendered to police without incident, according to the release.

There was a heavy police presence at the Darlington Court apartments off South Virginia Road. Officers from Cary, Algonquin, Lake in the Hills and Oakwood Hills assisted at the scene, and SWAT team members from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System also were present.

Squad cars, firetrucks and ambulances were blocking off streets near the complex on Darlington Lane, while traffic still was moving on Virginia.

Officers and SWAT team members left the scene about 8 p.m.

Reder was taken into custody on two active arrest warrants, one from McHenry County and one from DuPage County. Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues, according to the release.

The incident was isolated and believed to be related to a domestic situation. Police said there is no danger to the public, and there were no injuries Friday.
